THE SPA AND ITS SURROUNDINGS

Puebla de Sancho Pérez (at 6 Km ), near the first mountain ranges of Sierra Sur, is the nearest town to the Spa and the municipality to which the Spa belongs. It was part of the Order of Santiago ( old Order of Knights) coming to be a commandery of it; there are still some houses where we can lwatch the coats of arms of important families that used to live here,  and the old House of Commandery.

The parochial Church of   "Santa Lucia" (XVI century), was built on another one of mudejar style, with a rubblework tower and bricks filigree.

At 8 Km. we have the beautiful city of Zafra, called "Safar" by the arabs.

Zafra, El Parador Nacional de Turismo de Zafra, bello alcázar del S.XVowning a very wide and important historic-artistical heritage, is certainly one of the most important business center in the south of Extremadura. Its annual regional cattle market and exhibition gives continuity to its famous ones of medieval origin.

Its Plazas Mayores, known as "plaza chica" (small plaza) and "plaza grande" (big plaza) have their origin in XV and XVI centuries and they are communicated by a nostalgic arcade.

The parochial church of Our Lady of the Candles belongs to  Gothic style, with magnificent  baroque and churrigueresque retables. Several convents tell us about their past through important religious architectonic examples from XV and XVI centuries: Santa Catalina, Santa Clara, Santa María, de la Cruz, del Rosario, San Francisco, etc.

The fortress from S. XV century, reconverted in national inn, was the residence of the dukes of Feria and has a beautiful herrerian central yard.

The Palace house of the Marquises of Solana, remarkable example of twentieth century in neoarab style,  and the Big House, a palace from XVII century,  are good examples of the civil architecture in Zafra.

Fuente de Cantos is the home town of the great painter Francisco de Zurbarán (1598), whose house is now a Museum-House.

This town has a well known regional fame because of two annual feasts that have been declared of regional touristic interest: the one called "Chanfaina", a gastronomic meeting about the lamb, and the "Romeria of San Isidro", in the month of May, an enormous concentration in honour of the patron saint of the country labours. Noble houses and the beautiful parochial church of  "La Granada", from XV century, are samples of civil and religious architecture worth to be visited.

From Fuente de Cantos we can go to Monesterio, important center of pig transformation industries, wellknown for the production of the best iberico ham and in its surroundings we find Calera de León, with its beautiful Convent of Santiago (XV century), and the famous Monastery of Tentudía in the mountain ranges of this name with a remarkable mudejar arcade.

Llerena, in the middle of Extremadura South countryside , is another town not far from the Spa  worth to be visited because of the remarkable samples of religious, civil and military architecture it has.

Teatro romano de ReginaThe magnificent Church dedicated to Our Lady of "La Granada" (XII and XIV centuries), the Curch of Santiago, the Zapatas Palace, a wide number of baroque and mudejar frontages and rests of the ancient city wall are some of the reasons for this pleasure trip.

The episcopal palace (XVI century) was the residence of the Court of the Inquisition in those times. At 6 Kms. from Llerena is Casas de Reina with a magificent roman theatre, the theatre of Regina.

Villafranca de los Barros and Almendralejo are two important towns near the Spa and famous by its wines and olive oil as well as by some civil and religious architectonic samples.

Almendralejo, a city of important wine cellars and the capital of the region of Tierra de Barros, with the beautiful Parochial Church of "La Purificación", (XVI century) of gothic and renaissance styles.

In the park of  "La Piedad" is the hermitage of the city patroness, dated in XVI century and remodeled in XVIII century.

The Marquis of "Monsalud" Palace, XVIII century, is still today the seat of  the Almendralejo city hall.

There are many counts and marquises palaces, built in XIX and XX centuries, being remarkable the Oliva Count and The Encomienda Marquis ones. Almendralejo has a  very typical feast: the feast of the Candelas (Candles), celebrated at the beginnings of every  February and declared of regional touristical  interest.

In Villafranca de los Barros we can enjoy an exuberant gothic religious frontage, one of the better in Extremadura, the one of the Church of Our Lady of the Valley, built by order of the Emperor Charles I.

The hermitage of "La Coronada", XV century, with two  crown-shaped towers, has a remarkably attractive aspect.

Other visits we can make from the Spa are Fregenal de la Sierra and Jerez de los Caballeros, in the southern mountain ranges, centers of artisan production of iberic ham of excellent quality and owners of the most admirable and abundant historic-artististical heritage in the south of the region.

Curches, towers and fortresses are part of  the architectonic legacy of these two important cities very near of the province of Huelva (Andalusia).

The Holy Week in Jerez de los Caballeros has been declared of regional touristical interest.

Mérida, at some  60 Kms., is at an excellent distance to know its archeological roman  whole, declared  mankind´s patrimony, to which must be added the National Museum of Roman Art, the Visigothic Museum and a large number of historic-artistical options as the Arab Alcazaba, the Concathedral, Saint Eulalia´s Basilica, etc., more than  enough elements  that make worth a visit to the regional capital that in the ancient roman times was also the capital  of the roman province of Lusitania.

Other not far towns of touristical interest are  Badajoz, Sevilla, Cáceres y Córdoba...
